FEATURE: Is Shift Dress Retiring This Year? Not a Chance!
NEW YORK – Last year we kept noticing celebrities in sleeveless shift dresses popping up here and there, and we thought it was great to see shift dresses back in fasion. The shift dress, sometimes referred to as the chemise dress, continues its run this year. Designers Zac Posen, Marc Jacobs, Oscar de la Renta (!), Michael Kors (!), Calvin Klein, Reem Acra, Vera Wang, Doo. Ri, Narcisco Rodriguez and Max Azria all included the shift dress in their Spring 2008 and Fall 2008 collections shown in New York earlier this year. High-profile celebrities support the trend as well (see photos below).
So, why is this dress so popular and keeps coming back again and again? Introduced in the late 1950s, the shift dress trend reached peak popularity in mid 1960s when it was widely adopted by young girls as casual day wear. Shift dress was loved by everybody for its flattering shape. It was cut straight from the shoulders down and sometimes flared from the hip area, which was great for hiding figure imperfections (i.e. hips that are too wide). The shift dress is an easy piece to incorporate into different styles. It could be part of work wear by day and then become dinner or date wear by night.
Well, anything without sleeves is our all-time favorite. It looks sexy — not on Madonna though.
